The 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid is the next SUV in Toyota’s premium lineup to get a hybrid drivetrain. All its smaller siblings are equipped with such engines. Now, with rumors becoming louder, we expect both it and Lexus LX Hybrid in salons during 2020. The company is not confirming this yet. It is still early though. But, it is not going to take too long in 2019 before Toyota announces plans for GX Hybrid.
Well, all hybrid drivetrains are using a different nomenclature for petrol and hybrid variants. So, the other one won’t be a part of GX 460 or GX 460h. We could see it as GX 550 or 560 instead. More important is what is under the hood of this mode. Is it going to be the same engine Toyota Highlander Hybrid is using? Or engineers are hybridizing existing drivetrain? Hardly. The most certain option is a new unit. What it could be, we still don’t know. Some clues and rumors are there, so we will try to analyze the possibilities for 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid.
2020 Lexus GX Hybrid Engine
The 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid will take either a V6 or a V8 engine under its hood. Well, the company will try to make a more powerful unit as it is possible. Currently, a strong hybrid lays under the hood of Toyota Highlander. This SUV is a three-row vehicle that is capable to produce 306 hp. A further boost could make this system more potent. That is more power than the current V6 is delivering for standard Lexus GX.
Under the bonnet of the petrol version is a 4.6-liter V8 with 400 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and offers an all-wheel drive only. If hybrid rumors become true, we expect a 2WD drive as well.
A hybridization of this V8 engine is a less likely option. We don’t have a serious contender in SUV or truck segment with such unit. Some custom-made engines are available, but Lexus is not going to experiment with GX.
2020 Lexus GX Hybrid vs Lexus LX Hybrid
The same problems are bothering the Lexus LX. This premium SUV also needs a similar upgrade to continue its battle against the upcoming Lincoln Navigator. Ford is electrifying its full-size SUVs, and the plan is to wipe the competition. But, if anyone can deal with the Blue Oval company in the US, that is Toyota. The immediate response is coming with 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid and LX Hybrid. Only thing is the battle is still unofficial, and neither company is announcing plans for 2020.
2020 Lexus GX Hybrid Release Date and Price
The 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid is not coming any time soon. Toyota will wait for the last minute to announce this addition. It can happen late next year earliest, but more probably somewhere during 2020. At the same time, we will know what is going on with LX and its hybrid engine.
The price of the 2020 Lexus GX Hybrid will be about $5,000 more than for a standard model. Currently, it costs from $52,000. Some upper trims will raise the price over $70k.
