Ford announced that they will build the new full-size Expedition SUV with a hybrid drivetrain. The same engine will be available for the premium version – Lincoln Navigator. That triggers an alarm in other companies. Toyota, as a leader in this segment, can’t just watch the things go by. Soon after the mentioned announcement, we could read rumors about the 2020 Lexus LX Hybrid.
Well, almost entire lineup in Lexus family has a hybrid option. There are subcompact and compact UX and NX, then mid-size RX. Now, it is time for large GX and LX to get an engine with electric support. We doubt the Toyota as the parent company, could go further and make a plug-in version. But, who knows? They are the only company that has a mid-size model, Highlander, with such drivetrain.
Mild-Hybrid System for 2020 Lexus LX 570
It is not easy to create a suitable hybrid drivetrain for a full-size SUV. That is why 2020 Lexus LX Hybrid is still questionable. Well, all other similar vehicles are. The only example we can find among huge vehicle is Ram 1500 truck with a mild-hybrid engine. With electric support from small batteries, this pickup gains two extra miles for combined MPG rating. Well, we used to see some significant upgrades. But, with such vehicles, it is not easy to achieve.
We pick a full-size SUVs or trucks because of their size. Huge drivetrains with massive outputs are needed to power these mules. A V8 would lose some agility with a hybrid system, although the mileage benefits of it.
2020 Lexus LX Hybrid Specs
The 2020 Lexus LX Hybrid will definitely go to use the existing drivetrain. Toyota and its engineers will pair it with the small electric motor to get better mpg rating. Well, do not expect a spectacular move, since the 2020 Lexus LX 570 Hybrid could only make a 5.7-liter unit reach 20 mpg for a highway drive. But, that is already something. In future, when some serious hybrid system takes place under the hood of the LX SUV, we will have combined numbers at this region.
The standard unit is a 5.7-liter V8. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission to put out 380 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. A full-time AWD is the only option. The same drivetrain is under the hood of the Toyota Land Cruiser. The sibling could also get the same hybrid system as the LX since these two vehicles are sharing many other things. Another downside will be a drop in towing capacity since the 2020 Lexus LX Hybrid won’t be able to tow 7,000 pounds as the standard model.
2020 Lexus LX Hybrid Release Date
Carmakers are still silent about hybrid drivetrains for their big vehicles. Only Ford stepped up and announced their plans. But, we are sure others have some aces upon their sleeves. If we have to guess, then we give an advantage to Toyota and Lexus to come with first hybrid units. The 2020 Lexus LX Hybrid won’t appear during 2019 definitely. Preview or concept could be presented, but the production SUV needs more time for development. The release date also depends on the form of the system. If Toyota goes after mild-hybrid, then the 2020 Lexus LX 570 Hybrid could be the first one to get.
