If you live outside the US, you won’t see too many Tacoma or Tundra trucks. These two are leaders in their segments in North America. But, the Hilux is the worldwide edition of the mid-size pickup. Australia, Europe, Middle East, South America, South Africa… this nameplate is everywhere. Well, the widespread of the pickup makes it very different depending on which market it shows up. But, the new 2020 Toyota Hilux will bring some radical changes for most of them.
The 2020 Toyota Hilux and Tacoma are two close siblings, although they are not sharing market. When one changes, these modifications are taking effect on another truck. In this case, the new Tacoma for the 2020 season is going through a big restyling. So, the new Hilux can count on some updates. Well, the major difference between these two is under the bonnet. While the fans in the USA are eagerly waiting for a diesel unit, it is the base drivetrain for Toyota Hilux. Updated, it will offer more power and better fuel economy.
2020 Toyota Hilux Specs
So, what kind of drivetrains we can find for 2020 Toyota Hilux? Although sales of diesel trucks are significantly higher, the Japanese company still offers a petrol unit for some markets. Well, emission and efficiency regulations are not too strict like in the US, so these engines will be used in the foreseeable future.
The base unit is a 2.4-liter diesel engine that is capable to produce 150 hp and 250-300 lb-ft of torque. Automatic and manual transmission are choices for all Hilux trucks. Again, some markets will offer five or six paces for each of these gearboxes. A turbocharger is providing extra power for the diesel engine. The configuration is very similar for markets that will see the 2020 Toyota Hilux with a 2.5-liter engine. Turbocharger and transmission options are the same. But, this powertrain delivers 100-145 hp and 150-250 pound-feet of torque.
One of the favorites to be the diesel solution for Toyota Tacoma is a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV unit. It produces 180 hp and 330 lb-ft. However, emissions are too high, and if the Japanese carmaker fixes this, the engine could head to the US. The largest diesel unit is a 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV. It produces 165 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.
Three petrol engines are also part of the 2020 Toyota Hilux lineup. A base 2.0-l unit can deliver 140 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque, while a 2.7-liter drivetrain raises the output to 160 hp and 180 lb-ft. The most powerful engine in Hilux’ lineup is a 4.0-l petrol V6 with 235 hp and 280 pound-feet of twist.
2020 Toyota Hilux Equipment, Versions
The level of equipment for the 2020 Toyota Hilux will depend on each market. We can find some special editions in Australia, where this truck is very popular. Rogue, Rugged, and Rugged X are pickup trucks that look like models with aftermarket tuning. But, the company gives a warranty for all parts. Rogue is more street-oriented, and Rugged and Rugged X are more off-road adapted. In some other markets, if you need the Hilux for various terrains, then SW4 upgrade is a good choice.
The current generation of the Hilux truck was released in 2015. Now, it is time for a facelift, and all 2020 Toyota Hilux around the world will present a new look. It will happen early next year. We don’t have any info about prices. As said, the cost heavily depends on the market where the truck is coming out.
